Postcards are a great money-saving option for delivering the message in your direct mail campaign in a quick and succinct way. However, the USPS has certain requirements for content and images on a postcard. Grow Data maintains an up-to-date knowledge of all postcard rules and requirements, so you don’t have to. Self-Enclosed Mailers

At Grow Data, we are masters of the self-enclosed mailer. Self-enclosed Mailers are the perfect in-between size when you want something smaller than a full letter and larger than a postcard. We have several different size and folding options available. The lowest cost option is called a tabbed mailer, which gets folded into 3 parts and then sealed with a small clear or colored circular tab with the postal information on the back. When then the tab is cut the envelope opens up, revealing the marketing message inside.

A more popular and slightly more expensive version is called a snap-pack.  These self-enclosed mailers can be the size of a small postcard or as big as a legal letter document. The idea is that the letter gets sealed on all sides, so the mailer looks like one piece, but there is, in fact, a perforation on an inseam on one side that can be easily torn open. The look of a snap pack is similar to a bank issued pin number assignment, a debit/credit card sent in the mail, or a government issued check or notice.

Enveloped Full-Size Letter

Our full sized letter and small letter mailer options are a great way to send a formal requests or notices. Full-sized letters are also great for first class mailing because consumers will pay careful attention to it as it is alongside their personal mail. 

Envelope selection and message are also very important. We have seen letters with horrible response rates because of the message on the outside of the envelope. The most effective envelope message we’ve seen is not having one – the allure and surprise of a blank envelope create curiosity that leads to higher open rates.

The average attention span of your consumer is less than 2 seconds – you have that amount of time to gain their interest. The best way to grab the customer’s attention is to play to their emotion – you can do this by focusing on what life will be like for your customer once they choose your solution. With most businesses service, price, craftsmanship, and selection availability are all critical components to the customer’s decision. Oversized Legal or Multi-Page Mailers

Multi-paged mailers (e.g., catalog) and larger legal sized letters are a great way to build interest. Long form letters and surveys have been known to generate astronomical response rates. The trick with this type of mailer is to use it for the right audience and offer. If your product is complex and your target audience is looking to make an educated purchase decision, you had better consider a multi-page or over-sized mailer. If your company sells life-saving equipment to fire and police departments what type of mailer would you send to a list of key decision makers? Would you send a postcard, self-enclosed mailer, enveloped letter, or our multi-page mailer that can offer much more of the detailed product information that they will be looking for?

For multi-page and over-sized mailers, think about the audience and your product or service first to ensure they are a good fit. If your product line is extensive and you know that your customers want to see the details rather than a quick sales pitch, a multi-paged mailer is a great solution.

Specialty Mailing Pieces

Specialty mailing pieces include anything that is outside of the normal size and shapes that we see in our direct mail every day. The USPS has authorized variable shapes and materials to be mailed including the following:

  • Clear Postcards/Translucent Postcards
  • Shaped Images – with restrictions (House, Car, Boat, Character shaped mail pieces)
  • Pop-Up Postcards
  • Bag Mailers or Disc Mailers (an expandable disc-like piece)
  • Anything outside of the standard postcard, self-enclosed mailer, and envelope & letter
  • Thin Postcards/Self-Enclosed Mailers – (thinner, more durable plastic material allowed by the USPS)

These are all more expensive than normal standard direct mail, but the added expense may be worth the price if the response rate increase justifies it.  Always try to test small batches if you are using an expensive mail piece, and then if it works, you can expand your marketing strategy.
